Here at Legion Jiu Jitsu, we strive to teach our students how to be adept at both Gi and No Gi training. We offer world-class training in both styles of Jiu-Jitsu and welcome you to be a part of whichever class suits your needs! In our Luta Livre No Gi training, we practice all of the same techniques but without the traditional clothing, making a new form of Jiu-Jitsu that makes you rely on your body rather than your grips. We welcome people of all skill levels from all over Hendersonville, Gallatin, and beyond to give our No Gi Jiu-Jitsu a try!
We know that jiu-jitsu is easily applied to real-world situations. Since Luta Livre is practiced without the traditional Gi, you can't rely on fabric grips. Training without a Gi helps you focus on clinches, sweeps, and footlocks: the fundamentals that work in any situation.
History of Luta Livre
In the 1920s, Euclydes "Tatu" Hatem joined the Clube ACM in Rio de Janeiro, where he dedicated himself to Catch Wrestling: becoming a professional champion who toured the world and defeated opponents from every corner of it.
In its early days, Luta Livre was considered an art for those who could not afford a Gi, focusing on teaching communities of African descent in Brazil. This put it in direct contrast with jiu-jitsu, which was seen as an art of the upper class. The battles between the two arts were, in many ways, class warfare: and when Euclides Perreria beat Carlson Gracie, the rivalry continued for decades.
By the 1980s, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu had grown popular in Brazil, and Luta Livre representatives accepted challenges from jiu-jitsu champions in Vale Tudo and submission matches, cementing the art's place in combat sports history.
Today, Luta Livre thrives here at Legion with our instructors and the International Federation of Luta Livre Submission.
